Japan Petroleum Exploration has completed the exploratory drilling operation at offshore Hidaka area of Hokkaido to understand the presence of crude oil and natural gas in the designated area.

The exploratory drilling operation, which started in April 2019, is a part of the offshore exploration project commissioned by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (ANRE).

Located at about 50km offshore of Hidaka area of Hokkaido in a water depth of about 1,070m, the exploration well was drilled to a depth of approximately 2,530m below the seabed.

ANRE selected the location based on the geophysical survey results that were obtained through its own seismic vessel SHIGEN. Accordingly, the actual plan of exploratory drilling was prepared and developed with the company.

Japan Petroleum obtained various geological data through the operations. It also carried out a production test against the gas reservoir where indications of natural gas existence was recognised, and achieved stable gas production.

After conducting analysis and evaluation of the data obtained from this exploration drilling, Japan Petroleum will further consider the possibility of exploration opportunity in this area.
