Italy-based offshore oil and gas company Eni is set to restart drilling activities on its 30 trillion cubic feet Zohr gas field located in the Egyptian sector of the Mediterranean Sea in January 2016.

The announcement has been made following a meeting between Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi and the Republic of Egypt President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in Cairo.

The meeting served as an opportunity for Eni to review all its assets in Egypt with the aim of increasing the production in the country.

The company’s primary focus was on the Nooros discovery, which is expected to reach a potential of 5MMsmc/d with the starting of production on the second well.

The offshore Zohr natural gas field is located in the Shorouk concession, which has an area of 3,765km². Eni won the concession in 2013.

Zohr is estimated to lie in an area of 100km² and at a depth of 1,450m. It was discovered in 2015 by Eni.

In September 2015, Eni discovered a huge gas reserve in the Zohr 1X NFW well at its Zohr prospect offshore Egypt.

The discovery well, located in 4,757ft of water in the Shorouk Block, was drilled to a total depth of 13,553ft.
