Geological and geophysical services provider OCTIO Gravitude has secured a contract to provide gravimetry services for the Ormen Lange field in Norway.

OCTIO will start the survey work during summer this year.

Ormen Lange is a deepwater natural gas field operated by Norske Shell and located 120km off the coast of Norway in the Norwegian Sea. Other partners in the field include Petoro, Equinor Energy, INEOS E&P and Vår Energy.

Expected to last for a period of four weeks, the survey will generate water depth and gravitational field measurements at the seabed above the reservoir.

Since 2012, both seabed gravimetry and subsidence measurements occur every second year at Ormen Lange gas field.

OCTIO Gravitude will use the new gWatch technology for the gravimetry survey. This technology was introduced in 2018.

OCTIO Gravitude CEO Leon Løvheim said: “It is a challenging time for the industry, but low oil prices can make an even better case for cost-efficient monitoring technologies like gWatch.

“Gravimetry is a mature technology, and in some fields, it is the only geophysical monitoring tool utilised, completely removing the need for more costly 4D seismic”.

According to OCTIO, the gravity and subsidence dataset acquired this year will provide a measurement of critical baseline.

Siem Offshore-operated Siem Pride vessel will be used for this survey.

The company will deploy the gWatch instrumentation on a total of 120 subsea measurement locations via ROV supplied by Norwegian operator IKM Subsea.
