Petronas Research and the FASTsubsea joint venture (JV) between FSubsea and Aker Solutions have signed a ‘joint industry project’ contract to develop and test a low-cost subsea multiphase pump.
Under the agreement, the Petronas subsidiary will support the development and testing programme of the pump.

Meanwhile, FASTsubsea intends to bring the product available to the market in 2022.
Aker Solutions chief technology officer John Macleod said: “Getting this participation from a large operator such as Petronas is a significant achievement, not least given current industry conditions.”
FASTsubsea managing director Alexander Fuglesang said that the technology enables operators to rapidly extract ‘additional hydrocarbons’ from existing offshore wells and installed infrastructure.
In a press statement, Aker Solutions said: “End users are drawn to the technology as increased recovery now can be done in a much more sustainable way and at up to 50% lower CapEx investment than conventional subsea pumping systems.”

By GlobalDataPetronas Research’s participation in the development comes in addition to an Nkr11m ($1.2m) commitment from the Research Council of Norway (RCN) and allows engineering-related activities to commence immediately.
Aker Solutions noted that the project is still open for another two operators to join as the joint industry project partners.
In June, Petronas selected Maersk Drilling’s deepwater semi-submersible drilling rig, Maersk Developer, for work off the coast of Suriname.
