Italian oil and gas industry contractor Saipem has secured two offshore drilling contracts in Norway and the Middle East with a combined value of more than $200m.

The first contract, signed with German firm Wintershall, involves the drilling of two wells with the option of two additional ones. The contract expands Saipem’s client base and bolsters its presence in the North Sea-Norwegian Sector.

Saipem will deploy the Scarabeo 8 sixth-generation semi-submersible rig to carry out the work. The rig, capable of operating under harsh weather conditions, is expected to operate until the second quarter of 2020.

“The Wintershall contract expands Saipem’s client base and bolsters its presence in the North Sea-Norwegian Sector.”

In the Middle East, the company secured another contract which involves the extension of the use of high specs Jack up Perro Negro 7 drilling unit for an unnamed client. The self-elevating drilling unit is designed to operate in water depths of up to 375ft.

The contract strengthens the company’s footprint in the strategic market of the Middle East as well as its presence in shallow water operations. Saipem noted that drilling had already commenced at the end of the first quarter of 2019.

Saipem focuses on delivering engineering, drilling and construction of energy and infrastructure projects. With an employee strength of 32,000, the company operates across 60 countries.
