Norway-based Shearwater GeoServices has received a contract from Petrobras for the deepwater Ocean Bottom Node (OBN) seismic acquisition for the Tupi and Iracema projects in the Santos Basin offshore Brazil.

Shearwater said this will be the largest OBN seismic survey in the country at the Tupi field and is also a base survey for potential future 4D surveys.

Shearwater GeoServices CEO Irene Waage Basili said: “This award confirms Shearwater’s leadership in deepwater OBN an exciting, growing and future-oriented sub-segment of the marine seismic industry.

“It reflects our scale, high-end vessels and dedication to technology, and represents a substantial addition to our backlog. We are pleased to again work for Petrobras.”

Shearwater plans to commence the surveys, which cover a total of 2,882km², at the Tupi and Iracema fields in the third quarter of this year. It is planned to be completed in approximately nine months.

To execute the contract, the company plans to use the SW Diamond and one additional vessel.

Previously known as the Tupi field, the Lula oil field is claimed to be one of the world’s biggest producing ultra-deepwater oil and gas fields.

Located in water depths from 2,000m to 5,000m in the Santos Basin, the field is situated approximately 250km off the coast of Rio de Janerio, Brazil.

Last year, India’s state-owned firm Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) selected Shearwater GeoServices for work in the Western Offshore India area.
