Shell subsidiary BG International has commenced gas production from Block 5C, also known as the Barracuda project, located in the East Coast Marine Area (ECMA) in Trinidad and Tobago.

The Barracuda project comprises two subsea development wells that are tied back to the Shell-operated Dolphin platform. One of the wells is located in the Endeavour field and the other in the Bounty field.

Shell integrated gas, renewable and energy solutions director Maarten Wetselaar said: “This is a key growth opportunity that supports our long-term strategy in the country as well as our global LNG growth ambitions.”

The Block 5C backfill project has sustained a near-term gas production capacity of approximately 25,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) (140MMscf/d).

It is expected to have a peak production capacity of approximately 40,000boe/d (220MMscf/d).

Barracuda project is the firm’s first greenfield project in the country, and also one of the firm’s largest in Trinidad and Tobago since the acquisition of BG Group in 2016.

In a press statement, Shell said: “The ECMA is one of the most prolific gas-producing areas in Trinidad and Tobago. As part of Shell’s development strategy, the company has sought ways to access the significant volumes that exist in the ECMA and to bring them online.”

Shell is planning to deliver the four-well development project in Block 22 and NCMA 4, known as the Colibri project.

Earlier this year in Trinidad and Tobago, BHP and its partner have started oil production from the Ruby Project located in the shallow water in Block 3(a) within the Greater Angostura Field.
