The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) has announced that oil and gas operator Spirit Energy was in the process of concluding the drilling of wildcat well 16/1-33 S located in production licence (PL) 780.

The well is located near the Ivar Aasen field in the central part of the North Sea.

Drilled about 5km north of the Ivar Aasen field, the well is approximately 200km west of Stavanger.

The oil and gas firm’s objective was to prove petroleum in reservoir rocks in the Sleipner and Skagerrak Formations.

The well encountered the Sleipner Formation with a thickness of some 205m, while the Skagerrak Formation resulted in a thickness of around 75m.

According to NPD, the well was classified as ‘dry’ and was not formation-tested.

This is the first exploration well in PL-780 where Spirit Energy serves as the operator.

The well was drilled by the Leiv Eiriksson semi-submersible rig to vertical and measured depths of 3,042m and 3,158m respectively, below sea level at a depth of 116m.

NPD noted that the well will now be permanently plugged and abandoned.

Leiv Eiriksson rig will now proceed to drill wildcat well 6507/4-1 in ConocoPhillips-operated PL-1009.

In January 2018, Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) of Norway gave approval to Spirit Energy to use ‘Island Innovator’ semi-submersible mobile drilling facility to test wildcat wells in the Norwegian Sea.
