Wood secures contract to upgrade National Grid gas networks in UK

Wood will undertake a review of National Grid’s potential future introduction of hydrogen to its network.

By Archana Rani

British electricity and gas utility company National Grid has awarded a five-year contract to engineering and consulting group Wood to upgrade its gas transmission assets.

The contract includes providing controls and metering upgrades for the gas transmission assets, as well as reviewing hydrogen blending in the gas network.

In a press statement, Wood said: “With natural gas currently used to heat more than 80% of Britain’s homes and provide 40% of electricity generation, maintaining this infrastructure is essential to improve the performance and resilience of the transmission network.”

Wood will help in the digitalisation of projects, identify and implement technologies required to update the equipment.

The firm will also upgrade control systems and improve cybersecurity across the gas transmission network in the country.

The work is expected to allow more efficient operation of systems by National Grid while enhancing gas measurement with reduced CO₂ emissions.

As part of the contract, Wood will also undertake a review of National Grid’s potential future introduction of hydrogen to its network. This could be either 100% hydrogen or blended (with natural gas).

The company will identify the associated risks and mitigations to ensure accurate flow measurement, equipment maintenance, and system performance.

Wood applied intelligence business president German Carmona said: “We are delighted to embark on a new partnership with National Grid to enable the safe, secure, and reliable operation of their gas network to meet the energy needs of the UK.

“This award allows us to leverage our cutting-edge digital tools and domain expertise in intelligent operations and maintenance solutions to support National Grid in their journey to achieving carbon neutrality.”

National Grid has set a target to reduce its direct emissions to net-zero by 2050, in compliance with the UK’s net-zero target.
