Tap Oil has drilled the Zola-1 exploration well, which is located in the offshore Carnarvon Basin, Western Australia, to a depth of 3,509m.
Zola-1 is located in permit WA-290-P, immediately south of the giant Gorgon gas field in the Carnarvon Basin.
The well is being drilled in 285m of water and the primary Mungaroo Formation target will be intersected at approximately 4,300m below sea level.
Zola-1 will test the gas potential of several top and intra Mungaroo Formation sands, the primary reservoir at Gorgon.
For secondary targets the well will be further drilled to a target depth of 5,000m.
The well will take about 50 days to reach the target depth and will then be plugged and abandoned.
The Zola prospect, a large Triassic tilted fault block on trend with the giant Gorgon gas field, is expected to hold recoverable gas volumes between one trillion and two trillion square feet.
