Ophir Energy has made a new gas discovery in the Chaza-1 exploration well offshore Tanzania, the first gas discovery of block 1.
The Chaza-1 well, which is located 18km from the coast in 952m of water, was drilled to a total depth of 4,895m and encountered a high quality, gas-bearing reservoir with a distinctive seismic anomaly.
Chaza-1 is the third of a three-well sequence that forms part of an Initial Work Programme across blocks 1, 3 and 4.
Two other discoveries, Chew and Pweza, were also made in the block 4 campaign.
The Chaza-1 well is operated by Ophir, which holds a 40% interest, with BG International holding 60%.
The blocks cover 27,000 square kilometres of the Mafia Basin and the northern portion of the Ruvuma Basin in water depths ranging from 100m to 3,000m.
