Flight bans due to the volcanic ash cloud over Europe should not have any effect on North Sea oil and gas field operations, industry officials said today.

A huge ash cloud from an Icelandic volcano caused air travel chaos across Europe yesterday and today, grounding commercial passenger jets and preventing staff-change helicopters from reaching oil and gas fields in the North Sea for a second day.

Statoil said there was still no impact on oil and gas production today, despite all helicopter flights to North Sea offshore platforms being suspended due to volcanic ash clogging European airspace.

UK North Sea field operators have not yet commented on individual installations.
