Shell has extended its contract to use Helix Energy Solutions’ Q4000 vessel for well intervention services in the US Gulf of Mexico.

Helix has been providing well intervention services to Shell since 2011, using the Q4000 semisubmersible under a master service agreement.

The latest three-year contract will run through the end of 2017.

"Shell has remained a customer for Helix over a number of years, and we appreciate their confidence in our company’s well intervention services."

Helix Energy Solutions president and CEO Owen Kratz said: "Shell has remained a customer for Helix over a number of years, and we appreciate their confidence in our company’s well intervention services.

"Given the current state of the oil and gas markets, we view this contract as a step forward in further executing our business strategy."

The Q4000 entered service in the Gulf of Mexico in 2002. It is a DP3 semi-submersible vessel, designed for well intervention in water depths to 10,000ft.
