Iran’s state-owned Pars Oil and Gas Company (POGC) has discovered a major oil layer beneath the Ferdowsi gas field off the coast of the Persian Gulf in southern Iran.

POGC managing director Ali Vakili said the new layer has a reserve capacity of 34 billion barrels.

“The new oil layer is regarded as one of the biggest layers in the country and we are currently digging an oil rig to complete our assessments,” said Vakili.

The Ferdowsi gas field is situated 30km west of the Golshan field.
