BG Group has confirmed the presence of light oil in the Tupi area, with the successful drilling of the 11th well on the BM-S-11 concession in the Santos Basin, offshore Brazil.

The well, designated 3-BRSA-865A-RJS (3-RJS-677A) or Tupi W, was drilled at a water depth of 2,139m, about 275km off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, and 11km north-west of the original Tupi discovery well.

The well encountered a 90m reservoir section on the western flank of Tupi helping further delineate the size and quality of the field.

Oil samples taken from well 3-RJS-677A confirmed the presence of a light oil accumulation of approximately 28° API gravity.

Further testing will be conducted on Tupi W to confirm the initial productivity data for considering the allocation of a floating production, storage and offloading vessel to the west area of Tupi.

BG Group has a 25% interest in Tupi, while the operator Petrobras holds 65%, and Petrogal 10%.
