Encore Oil has discovered oil in the Varadero exploration well 28 / 9-2 in UK Central North Sea block 28 / 9 at a measured depth of 4,020ft within the target Tay Sandstone level.

The well was drilled to a total depth of 5,205ft where it encountered high quality hydrocarbon-bearing reservoir sandstones.

As per the initial analysis, a 400ft hydrocarbon-bearing interval with a calculated net pay of 106ft and oil with an API of 26° was identified.

EnCore CEO Alan Booth said the result at Varadero further supports the company’s view that block 28 / 9 likely contains a series of accumulations in Tay injectite sands.

“This well also encountered deeper sands of Cromarty age (the principal reservoir in Catcher) although, as anticipated, they were not hydrocarbon bearing at the Varadero location,” Booth said.

The well will be plugged and abandoned, and the Galaxy II rig moved to the Burgman prospect.
