Maersk Oil has won a licence in the Norwegian North Sea as a part of the latest APA Licensing Round.

The licence is a geographical extension of licence PL501, where operator Lundin and partners Statoil and Maersk Oil made the recent Avaldsnes discovery in blocks 16 / 3 and 16 / 6.

The extension will help the licencees evaluate Avaldsnes and maintain alignment over the wider Avaldsnes area.

Maersk Oil and its partners will drill two appraisal wells in the region this year.

Lundin and Statoil will each continue to hold a 40% stake and Maersk Oil the remaining 20% stake under the new licence extension.

Maersk Oil Norway managing director Morten Jeppesen said that the firm’s strategy is to grow its business in Norway and build a significant portfolio of exploration and producing assets.
