Chevron has discovered gas in the Orthrus-2 well of the Carnarvon Basin offshore Western Australia.

The Orthrus-2 well, located in the WA-24-R permit area about 100km north-west of Barrow Islan, was drilled to a total depth of 14,098ft.

The well encountered 243ft of net gas pay, of which 102ft was encountered in a deeper, previously unexplored target interval in the Orthrus field.

Chevron Asia Pacific Exploration and Production president Jim Blackwell said that the company’s leading Carnarvon Basin leasehold and the accompanying exploration success help underpin further expansion opportunities in the Gorgon Project.

Chevron’s Australian subsidiary holds the operatorship of WA-24-R with a 50% interest, while Mobil Australia Resources holds a 25% stake, and Shell Development (Australia) and BP Exploration Alpha each hold 12.5%.
