Marathon Oil Norge has encountered three poor quality hydrocarbon deposits at wildcat well 25 / 10-11 on the Earb South prospect in the Norwegian North Sea.

The deposits were found at hydrocarbon-bearing Jurassic sandstones with the uppermost oil-bearing interval comprising a 6-8m-thick sand sequence immediately below the Draupne shale.

The Upper Jurassic sequence and the Middle / Upper Jurassic sequence also indicated 150m and 23-30m-thick intervals, but tests did not achieve a sustainable stable flow of oil and gas.

Extensive data acquisition was performed, which will support further evaluation of the area’s prospectivity.

The Transocean Winner drill rig was used to drill the first well to a depth of 4,534m to test the Earb South prospect in PL505.

PL505 is operated by Marathon Oil, which holds a 35% interest, with Lundin Petroleum, VNG Norway and Maersk Oil Norway, which each hold 30%, 20% and 15% interests, respectively.
