Shell has confirmed an oil discovery from well GM-ES-1 in the Guyane Maritime permit, offshore French Guiana.
The well is being drilled in a water depth of 2,000m and has encountered 70m of net oil play in two objectives.
The Tullow-operated joint venture is owned by Tullow with a 45% stake, Shell with 27.5%, Total with 25% and Northpet with 2.5%.
“We are early in the evaluation, but the initial results are encouraging for this new play,” said Dave Lawrence, Shell executive vice-president for exploration and commercial. “The joint venture will continue to drill ahead, evaluate the well results and determine the next steps.”
