The size of the discovery will be clarified when an appraisal well is drilled.
If profitable resources are proven, the discovery could be tied into the Varg field, the company said.
Extensive data collection and sampling have been carried out, as well as a successful formation test. The average production rate was 197 cubic metres of oil a day through a 20/64″ nozzle opening.
This is the 22nd exploration well in PL 038, which was awarded in the third licensing round in 1975.
The well was drilled to a vertical depth of 3,268m below the sea surface, and concluded in the Skagerrak formation in the upper Triassic.
The well was drilled by the Maersk Guardian facility in 86m of water. The facility will now drill appraisal well 15/12-21 A on the PL.
The licencees in PL 038 are owned by Det norske oljeselskap ASA (5%), Petoro AS (30%) and Talisman Energy (65%).
