Geological data company TGS-NOPEC Geophysical has commenced the acquisition of a new multi-client 3D survey in the Barents Sea to provide data of Norwegian blocks expected to be offered in future tenders.

The survey covers a 4,300km² area over the Hoop Fault Complex.

TGS-NOPEC Geophysical will deliver preliminary data packages to pre-funding customers in the third quarter of 2009. Final data products will be available to the industry in the first half of 2010.

The survey covers not only open blocks expected to be offered in later tender rounds but also acreage awarded in the recent Norwegian 20th round.

TGS-NOPEC Geophysical vice-president and general director of Europe/Russia Kjell Trommestad said that initial findings look positive.

“Interpretation work that TGS has completed utilising its existing library suggests that favourable conditions are present for the occurrence of hydrocarbons in the project area,” Trommestad said.

“Participating oil companies will benefit from the efforts we put into the planning and design of this survey as they work towards the next major licensing rounds in Norway.”
