The Shenzi field in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico has exceeded the facility’s nominal capacity of 100,000 barrels of oil per day, operator BHP Billiton has announced.
The field, which began production on 23 March, has exceeded capacity by having achieved sustained rates of 120,000bpd.

BHP chief executive J Michael Yeager said that the sustained high production was a significant milestone for the Shenzi development, which came on-stream three months ahead of schedule.
The facility, which Yeager described as a “reflection of the solid operations expertise” has also performed at more than 95% uptime during this period.
The wells are producing 120,000bpd from only seven wells. There are currently two additional wells shut in and available for production.
The Shenzi facility is located about 120 miles (195km) off the Louisiana coastline and is installed in approximately 4,300ft (1,300m) of water on Green Canyon Block 653, making it the second-deepest TLP in the world.
