Oil and gas exploration company Petroceltic International has discovered gas at its AT-1 well on the Isarene permit in Algeria.

The well has been successfully tested at a 1,915m depth at the Ordovician (Unit IV) zone, revealing the gas potential of the Ain Tsila ridge discovery, the company said.

The well was drilled by Petroceltic in collaboration with Algerian oil & gas company Sonatrach. Petroceltic has a 75% interest in the discovery while Sonatrach holds 25%.

Petroceltic chief executive Brian O’Cathain said the AT-1 well test surpassed pre-drilling expectations and was the most prolific single zone well test performed on the Isarene permit to date.

The well was not fracture stimulated and was tested under natural flow. Sampling and testing operations at the well have now been completed.

The AT-1 well is the second well in the present drilling programme on the Isarene permit in the Illizi basin, Algeria.
