In-depth defence and contingency preparation in offshore drilling should be addressed by the US Senate when it passes the climate and energy bill, Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) President Fred Krupp said.

Krupp pointed to reports saying that BP had insufficient water and oil handling capacity at the Deepwater Horizon disaster site as evidence for the company’s repeated failure to plan for contingencies.

“BP displays a disturbing inability to quantify the volume of oil that is gushing out of the well,” Krupp said.

Meanwhile, the cap put on the ruptured well last week collected 620,000 gallons of oil on 7 June and another 330,000 gallons by noon on 8 June, funnelling it to a ship at the surface, according to The Associated Press.
