Petrobras said it has discovered oil in pre-salt reservoirs at its offshore Albacora Leste field in the Campos Basin, Brazil.

The 6-ABL-57D-RJS well was drilled below the sandstone layer to a total depth of 4,536m.

Initial estimates suggest there is light, good-quality oil, but further tests are required to make an estimate of the volume, Petrobras said.

The well is situated 130km off the coast of Rio de Janeiro in a water depth of 1,956m.

Brazilian state-controlled oil company Petrobras holds a 90% interest in the Albacora Leste field, while the rest is owned by Spain’s Repsol.
