The US Government has appealed a federal judge’s order to lift a ban on offshore drilling following the Deepwater Horizon explosion and subsequent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

US District Judge Martin Feldman in a New Orleans court issued a preliminary injunction on 22 June that prevented the ban taking immediate effect.

The US Government appealed the decision and asked the judge to put a temporary stay on the order while the US Court of Appeals resolves its request for an emergency stay.

The government said it will undertake a process to issue a new suspension decision, according to the filing.

The filing added a stay pending appeal, which would further serve the public interest by eliminating the risk of another drilling accident while new safety equipment standards and procedures are considered.
