The European Union is considering limiting the depth of deepwater oil drilling in the aftermath of BP‘s massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

European Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger told La Stampa that the 27-nation bloc may use another agency to oversee offshore exploration if the European Maritime Safety Agency takes action on deepwater rigs.

Oettinger has suggested limiting drilling to a certain depth and providing a time limit on licences.

A standardisation is also needed to modernise old rigs, Oettinger added.

Oettinger has asked for a moratorium on new deepwater drilling permits until more secure safety measures are implemented.
