Ensco has acquired the Ocean Shield jack-up drilling rig from Diamond Offshore for approximately $189m.

The offshore drilling company said the KFELS Super B Class design rig includes a two million pound hoisting capacity, a 15,000psi high-pressure blowout preventer and a liquid mud capacity of 5,000 barrels.

The design also allows the company to drill in water depths of 350ft, up to a total depth of 35,000ft.

ESCO plans to rename the rig ‘Ensco 109’ and will assume the current drilling contract for the rig with Australia’s Apache Corporation until May 2011.

Ensco said it has four more Ensco 8500 Series ultra-deepwater semisubmersible drilling rigs being constructed at the Keppel FELS shipyard in Singapore.
