Dana Petroleum has discovered oil at the 20 / 2a-9 appraisal well in the Blackbird oilfield in the UK Central North Sea.
The well, operated by Nexen, was drilled in a water depth of approximately 367ft to a total depth of 12,000ft, targeting a high quality Upper Jurassic oil discovery.
Preliminary log analysis indicates that the well contains about a 75ft total thickness of good quality oil-bearing reservoir sands.
Dana said that logs and cores are in the process of being fully analysed.
In the first half of 2010, Dana drilled ten exploration wells making five oil and gas discoveries. For the second half of 2010, the company’s intensive drilling programme includes a further ten exploration and appraisal wells, targeting additional oil and gas reserves in proven hydrocarbon basins.
Blackbird is the first of these wells and the next three are being drilled in the UK, Netherlands and Egypt.
