Oil prices climbed above $79 a barrel today on expectations that the hurricane season will disrupt more oil operations in the Gulf of Mexico.

For September delivery, US crude gained 24¢ to stand at $79.22 by 06.58 GMT, while London Brent crude climbed 36¢ to $77.81 a barrel.

Friday’s prices settled down 32¢ to stand at $78.98 a barrel after reaching $79.60, the highest intraday price since 6 May 2010.
