Tullow Oil has made a major oil discovery in the Deepwater Tano licence offshore Ghana.

The Owo-1 exploration well encountered a gross vertical reservoir interval of 154m containing 53m of net oil pay.

Results of drilling, wireline logs and samples of reservoir fluids established Owo as a major new oilfield requiring further appraisal, Tullow said in a statement.

Tullow Oil exploration director Angus McCoss said the company is immediately drilling an appraisal sidetrack to further assess the size of this find.

Accelerated appraisal drilling will now focus on maturing the resources in Owo and the adjacent Tweneboa accumulation towards commercialisation, said McCoss.
