The US Government hopes to lift the ban on deepwater drilling ahead of the current November deadline, a top official at the Interior Department said.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management director Michael Bromwich said that the department has been gathering information to decide whether to revise or even lift the ban.

The moratorium has shut down drilling at 33 ocean wells in the wake of the BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The US House of Representatives passed a bill last week ending the agency’s drilling ban for oil companies that adhere to new safety mandates.
