Mexico’s state oil company Pemex is to delay its deepest offshore well Maximino until 2011 following deepwater drilling concerns in the wake of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The 9,600ft Maximino well is located 18.5 miles from the US border at sea.

Pemex has drilled about 20 deepwater wells so far in the Gulf of Mexico, according to Reuters.

National Hydrocarbons Commission head Juan Carlos Zepeda said that he is concerned about best practices in deep water.

“The delay would give us the correct timing for finishing working with Pemex on its review of internal regulation and, in case it’s necessary on top of that, specific regulation for exploration and production,” Zepeda said.
