Chevron has found natural gas in the Exmouth Plateau area of the Carnarvon Basin, offshore Western Australia.

The Brederode-1 exploration well, located within the WA-364-P permit area approximately 217 miles north-west of Onslow, encountered approximately 49ft of net gas pay, Chevron said.

The Brederode-1 well is situated in 4,550ft of water and drilled to a depth of 9,022ft.

Chevron Asia Pacific Exploration and Production president Jim Blackwell said the Brederode-1 discovery extends the gas resources farther offshore Australia and continues to expand the company’s discovered gas portfolio in the country.

Chevron’s Australian subsidiary has a 50% operating interest in WA-364-P while Shell Development Australia holds the remaining stake.
