Anadarko Petroleum has discovered oil in Mozambique’s Rovuma Basin.

The Ironclad well encountered 38m of sands saturated with crude and natural gas.

The well, located 70 miles south of Anadarko’s Windjammer gas discovery, was drilled to a depth of 17,400ft in 3,418ft of water.

Anadarko Petroleum spokesman John Christiansen said the discovery was unlikely to be commercial because it appears to have low permeability and low porosity.

Other companies exploring for oil and gas in the Rovuma Basin include Malaysia’s Petronas, Norway’s Norsk Hydro and Italy’s ENI.
