Chevron Nigeria has plugged and sealed the abandoned Funiwa 1A natural gas well offshore of the country, after a blowout claimed two lives in January.
The company made the announcement after drilling a relief well using the Transocean Baltic rig with approvals from the Nigerian authorities.
The relief well intersected the incident well at approximately 9,100ft, while cement was pumped in to achieve a permanent seal.
Production from the North Apoi field, which was earlier shutdown as a precaution, has resumed and is now producing approximately 2,000 barrels of oil each day.
The jack-up rig KS Endeavor caught fire on 16 January while drilling the exploration well and burned for several weeks, until it eventually sank.
Two workers were killed in the incident and another 152 had to be rescued.
The company said it is investigating the cause of the incident while continually monitoring the environment and is engaged in ongoing dialogue with the government, regulators and local communities.
