Chevron Australia has reported gas flows at the Pontus-1 exploration well, offshore of Western Australia.

"Chevron Australia is the operator of WA-37-L and holds a 47.3% interest in the permit."

The well, located in the WA-37-L permit in the Greater Gorgon area gas fields of the Carnarvon Basin, was drilled in 210m of water to a total depth of 5,054m.

Pontus-1 encountered around 30m of net gas pay and represents Chevron’s 14th discovery offshore of north-western Australia since 2009.

George Kirkland, Chevron Corporation vice chairman, said: "The Pontus-1 discovery again highlights Chevron’s exploration success as we continue building a significant natural gas position in Western Australia to supply Australia and the Asia-Pacific region."

Chevron Australia is the operator of WA-37-L and holds a 47.3% interest in the permit. Exxon Mobil and Shell Development Australia both hold a 25% stake, while Osaka Gas, Tokyo Gas and Chubu Electric Power hold minority interests in the permit.
