Wood Group Mustang has been awarded an engineering and procurement support contract for the world’s largest semi-submersible production facility, located off the northwest coast of Australia.

The contract, awarded by Samsung Heavy Industries, will involve the detailed engineering of topsides for the facility, which will weigh approximately 70,000t.

The processing unit will serve the Ichthys gas field, which lies in a water depth of 250m and is designed for a peak gas export rate of 1,657 million cubic feet a day.

Mustang president Steve Knowles said: "Our expertise in topsides design is unparalleled and we appreciate the opportunity to demonstrate our capabilities on this challenging design."

The idea of the processing plant is for gas to undergo preliminary processing offshore, before being exported to onshore processing facilities in Darwin, via an 889km sub-sea pipeline.

Mustang’s work is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2013, with the initial production from the project expected by the end of 2016.
