New bill introduced to ban offshore oil drilling in Tranquillon Ridge, California

California State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara) introduced a bill to ban offshore oil drilling in an area off the Santa Barbara County coastline.

The state approved protection for some state-controlled areas off the coastline in 1994 but the Tranquillon Ridge area was not included in the list.

A portion of the ridge in federal waters has already been drilled but Jackson’s SB 1096 bill proposes to end the loophole for state-managed areas of the ridge.

Statoil and ExxonMobil find more gas offshore Tanzania

Statoil and co-venturer ExxonMobil made what they call a high-impact gas discovery in the Piri prospect offshore Tanzania, marking the sixth discovery on Block 2 by the companies.

Piri-1, which was drilled using the Discoverer Americas drillship, is located 2km south-west of the Lavani-1 well in 2,360m of water.

Noble Energy acquires 50% stake in BP’s exploration leases in Gulf of Mexico

US-based energy company Noble Energy entered into an agreement to acquire ownership in 17 deepwater exploration leases in the Gulf of Mexico from BP Exploration & Production.

As per the agreement, the company will acquire a 50% working interest in 13 leases and an average 26% working interest in four leases, all of which are located in the Atwater Valley protraction area.

Noble Energy Gulf of Mexico, West Africa and Frontier senior vice-president Susan Cunningham said: "The deepwater Gulf of Mexico is one of Noble Energy’s core areas and today we have expanded our opportunity set there through the successful capture of a number of attractive and sizeable prospects."

Eni and Repsol to invest $1bn in Venezuela’s Perla offshore gas field

Spanish energy company Repsol and Italian oil and gas firm Eni will each invest $500m to develop the Perla offshore gas field in Venezuela.

Eni, Repsol and Venezuela state-run oil and gas firm Petroleos de Venezuela have signed strategic agreements regarding the exploitation of the Perla field.

Repsol and Eni will each own 20% of a joint-venture (JV) firm that is planned to be established to exploit the field, with the remaining 60% to be held by Petróleos de Venezuela.

Det norske to acquire Marathon Oil Norge for $2.1bn

Norway-based oil exploration and development firm Det norske oljeselskap agreed to acquire Marathon Oil Norge for NOK12.6bn ($2.1bn).

The acquisition includes the Marathon Oil-operated Alvheim floating production, storage and offloading vessel, ten company-operated licenses and several non-operated licenses on the Norwegian Continental Shelf in the North Sea.

Marathon Norway’s operational experience from the Alvheim fields adds to Det norske’s exploration and development capabilities.

Statoil secures final approval to start drilling on Apollo prospect in Norway

Statoil secured final approval from the Norway Government to start exploration activities on the Apollo prospect in the Barents Sea.

The approval comes a day after Norwegian police arrested Greenpeace activists who boarded Transocean Spitsbergen drilling ship.

The activists boarded the rig in the early hours of 27 May 2014, when it was on its way for planned exploration drilling in the Hoop area of the Barents Sea.

Survey finds majority of North Sea oil workers want independent Scotland

A survey by Oilandgaspeople.com found that a majority of North Sea oil and gas workers will vote in favour of an independent Scotland.

A poll of more than 1,000 workers found that 64% plan to vote yes in a referendum that is due to take place in September 2014.

In a separate survey, more than half of 5,000 workers said they wanted to see more investment in British training.

MCA purchases two counter-pollution systems to clean up oil spills in the UK

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) purchased two new pieces of equipment that can be deployed anywhere in the UK to clean up oil spills.

Developed following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill response in 2010, the new high-tech equipment dubbed ‘NOFI Current Buster 6’ has been tested for the first time in Belfast, UK, and is claimed to be the latest in up-to-date technology.

The equipment has a hydrodynamic shape that reduces the drag force and allows the system to move easily through the water with the capacity to operate five times faster.
