Lundin Norway has encountered oil and gas in the drilling programmes of wildcat well 7219/12-1 and appraisal well 7219/12-1 A (Filicudi) in the Barents Sea.

They were drilled nearly 32km north-west of discovery well 7220/11-1 (Alta) and 37km south-west of discovery well 7220/8-1 Johan Castberg.

Primary and secondary exploration targets for wildcat well 7219/12-1 were to prove petroleum in two Early Jurassic and Late/Middle Triassic reservoir levels (Tubåen and Fruholmen formations).

The primary exploration target for appraisal well 7219/12-1 A was to procure geological data about the Early Jurassic/Late Triassic sandstone rocks (Nordmela and Tubåen formations).

Well 7219/12-1 indicated a total oil column of 60m and an overlying total gas column also of 60m, with 55m and 45m of this in sandstone with good reservoir properties in the Tubåen formation.

Well 7219/12-1 A also showed almost equivalent gas and oil column in the Nordmela and Tubåen formations with good reservoir properties.

"Initial estimates of the size of discovery Pare are between 5.5 million and 16 million standard cubic metres of recoverable oil equivalents."

The 7219/12-1 well was drilled to a vertical depth of 2,475m below sea level and ended in the Snadd formation in Late Triassic, while well 7219/12-1 A was drilled to a subsea depth of 1,800m and stopped in Fruholmen formation in Late Triassic.

Initial estimates of the size of discovery Pare are between 5.5 million and 16 million standard cubic metres of recoverable oil equivalents.

The company will assess further delineation and production testing of the discovery.

Extensive data and sampling were carried out in this drilling campaign.

Both wells were drilled by the Leiv Eiriksson drilling facility, which will now proceed to the production licence 492 in the Barents Sea to drill the 7120/1-5 appraisal well.
