Construction works have started on a $2.1bn industrial gas complex in Saudi Arabia, which will serve the Jazan refinery and terminal upon completion.

In April last year, Saudi Aramco awarded a contract to Jazan Gas Projects Company (JGPC), a joint venture (JV) between Acwa and US-based Air Products to build, own and operate the complex.

The gas complex will supply 75,000t per day to Saudi Aramco’s refinery, which is being built in Jazan.

Air Products will design and build the complex using its technology. Once built, the facility will be owned by the JV.

" … We are very proud to have demonstrated outstanding infrastructure financing, which has enabled us to be well advanced with the build schedule."

JGPC board chairman Mohammad Abunayyan said: "Since the contract was awarded, we are very proud to have demonstrated outstanding infrastructure financing, which has enabled us to be well advanced with the build schedule.

"Construction on-site started a month earlier than planned, initial drawings have been issued and we have a clear plan of mobilisation to Jazan from this date."

The gas complex comprises six air separation trains, will need 600 megawatts (MW) to operate and will produce oxygen and nitrogen.

Once operational, it is expected to create about 100 local jobs.

Upon completion, Air Products will have a 25% stake in the complex, while ACWA will hold the remaining 75%.
