3D at Depth and Technip USA have joined forces to expand and commercialise light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology in the Gulf of Mexico.

Under a joint development agreement (JDA) signed, the companies will expand the technology for subsea metrology, field survey and IRM applications.

LiDAR is referred to as laser scanning and is used to collect precise 3D models of subsea structures and seabed topography.

"This technology alliance also illustrates our continuous focus to develop technology and cost-efficient solutions to optimise deepwater subsea projects."

According to 3D at Depth, the technology will address the subsea data collection and imaging in deepwater challenges for metrology survey programmes.

The latest collaboration is expected to develop new applications and best practices for the mutual benefit of 3D at Depth and Technip.

3D at Depth co-founder and director of software engineering Brett Nickerson said: "Such an agreement will focus on new subsea LiDAR applications including the marriage of LiDAR and moving platforms.

In July, 3D at Depth completed the 75th LiDAR spool piece metrology with a 100% success rate for all metrologies to date, using its SL1 & SL2 LiDAR technology.
