Under the contract, KBR will provide site work including civil, structural, pipe, electrical, instrumentation and mechanical installation, as well as test and checkout services for the Baytown plant.

On completion, the new facility will produce ExxonMobil Chemical’s high-viscosity SpectraSyn Elite metallocene PAO (mPAO) base stock.

In September 2011, ExxonMobil Chemical said that the facility would have a capacity to produce 50,000t of high-viscosity SpectraSyn Elite mPAO per year.

Technip USA is the main contractor for the new facility and is responsible for engineering, procurement and construction.

KBR Services group president David Zimmerman said the recent contract award exemplifies the company’s ability to offer competitive, cost-effective construction services to its customers.

"We look forward to leveraging the past success experienced through our collaboration with Technip to deliver a world-class lubricant base stock facility to ExxonMobil Chemical safely, on schedule, and within budget," said Zimmerman.

According to ExxonMobil, SpectraSyn Elite mPAO base stocks, which are produced using a proprietary metallocene catalyst process, offer improved performance characteristics versus conventional PAO.
