Residents said that the blast happened after people rushed to collect fuel that had spilled from a fuel depot owned by the Kenyan Pipeline Company, according to the BBC.

Reports suggest the blast may have been sparked by a cigarette butt being thrown into an open sewer that was filled with fuel.

Kenya Prime Minister Raila Odinga said that the explosion was one of the worst disasters to have happened in the country’s oil sector.
