Under the terms of the deal, Emerson has agreed to serve as automation contractor. The company will use its technologies to help IndianOil meet the country’s new Bharat Stage VI (BS-VI) low-sulphur emissions standards, which are set to come into effect in April 2020.
Established by the Indian Government, Bharat Stage regulations address emissions from motor vehicles. BS-VI is the equivalent to Euro-VI, which is currently in place across several countries.
The maximum permitted amount of sulphur content in fuel under the BS-VI emission standards is ten parts-per-million.
The regulation places limits on carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter.

By GlobalDataEmerson Automation Solutions business executive president Lal Karsanbhai said: “Companies that leverage automation technologies and digital transformation programmes will have a significant advantage in their goal of reaching top quartile performance.
“IndianOil has long been a valued customer of Emerson, and we are proud to provide them with the technology and expertise they require to meet these new fuel regulations while also modernising operations.”
Emerson will upgrade 14 process units, including octane-boosting units and diesel hydro-treating units to reduce sulphur content.
These units will be either installed or boosted with desulphurisation technologies as part of the project.
Under the contracts, Emerson will install several technologies, including DeltaV distributed control systems; DeltaV safety instrumented systems and AMS asset management software.
Other technologies to be installed are WirelessHART-enabled and wired field instruments such as pressure, temperature and flow sensors; gas analysers; and control and isolation valves.
The scope of the contracts also comprises installation, commissioning, factory-acceptance testing and training support services for IndianOil refineries in Panipat, Vadodara, Haldia and Bongaigaon.
