Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and French energy major Total have delivered the first unconventional gas from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The gas was delivered from the Ruwais Diyab Unconventional Gas Concession, located 200km west of Abu Dhabi.

ADNOC noted that the gas has been delivered via a ‘purpose-built’ gas pipeline and ‘centralised early production facility’ in the Diyab field. The field allows distribution through the company’s gas network.
The latest move takes ADNOC a step closer to becoming self-sufficient in the UAE energy market.
It also marks a major milestone towards producing one billion standard cubic feet of gas from the Ruwais Diyab concession before 2030.
ADNOC Upstream executive-director Yaser Saeed Almazrouei said: “This achievement marks another important milestone in the development of the UAE’s unconventional gas resources as we deliver on our integrated gas strategy and work to achieve gas self-sufficiency for the nation.

By GlobalData“The accelerated progress in Ruwais Diyab is a testament to the long-standing partnership between ADNOC and TOTAL, which has enabled us to expedite the learning curve in the production of unconventional gas resources, provided cost optimisation opportunities, and driven efficiencies.”
The first gas from the concession comes just two years after ADNOC and Total signed the UAE’s first ‘unconventional gas concession’ agreement in November 2018.
Under this agreement, ADNOC granted a 40% stake in the Ruwais Diyab unconventional gas concession to Total.
As part of the agreement, Total started exploring, appraising and developing the concession area’s resources.
ADNOC recently completed the first phase of its predictive maintenance project that uses artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, such as machine learning (ML) and digital twins.
