The project was approved by Australia Environment Minister Sussan Ley under the ‘Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999’.
Ley stated: “My approval has also been informed by advice from the Commonwealth Independent Expert Scientific Committee on Coal Seam Gas and Large Coal Mining Development (IESC) to ensure the ongoing protection of precious water resources.”
Santos managing director and CEO Kevin Gallagher noted that the federal approval aligns with the conditions set by the NSW Independent Planning Commission.
Gallagher added: “We accept the conditions from the Commonwealth, which are very much in line with our other operations across the country and welcome the approval that all relevant matters of national environmental significance have been adequately addressed.

By GlobalData“Santos is excited about the prospect of developing the Narrabri Gas Project, a 100% domestic gas project that will deliver the lowest-cost source of gas for NSW customers.
The project is expected to provide for up to 50% of NSW’s gas needs, while delivering significant benefits to the local community and surrounding region.
Gas produced by the project will be transported to the NSW market via a new pipeline connection to the existing Moomba-Sydney pipeline.
In June, Santos welcomed the NSW government’s recommendation to approve its planning application for the Narrabri gas project.
In February 2017, Santos submitted the State Significant Development Application and associated Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for Narrabri to the NSW Department of Planning and Environment.
