JERA has taken delivery of its first cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Barossa Gas Project, operated by Santos, at the company’s Futtsu LNG terminal in Japan.
This shipment marks the beginning of LNG supplies from the Barossa field to JERA following the start of production at the project in late 2025.

Located offshore Australia’s Northern Territory, the Barossa Gas Project processes extracted gas at the Darwin LNG plant before it is shipped overseas.
The project has an annual production capacity of approximately 3.4 million tonnes of LNG. JERA, participating via its subsidiary JERA Australia, is entitled to off-take around 425,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of LNG in accordance with its equity share.
The inaugural cargo, carried by tanker the Sohshu Maru, arrived at the Futtsu terminal on 12 June.
Australian LNG is a key part of JERA’s fuel procurement strategy, which aims to maintain a diverse supply portfolio. The company’s investment in the Barossa Gas Project adds to its existing interests in Australia, which include both the Wheatstone LNG Project and the Scarborough gas field development.
The Scarborough development is expected to begin production later this year.
JERA indicated it will continue efforts to strengthen its LNG portfolio by sourcing supply from multiple regions including Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and the US.
The company also noted that its operations cover the full value chain, from upstream gas development to procurement, shipping and power generation. JERA stated that these activities are aimed at supporting energy stability in Japan.
Ownership of the Barossa Gas Project is divided between Santos with a 50% interest, PRISM Energy International Australia holding 37.5% and JERA Australia with a 12.5% share.
In January 2026, Santos reported it had successfully loaded and sent the first LNG cargo from Barossa, delivering it to the Sakai terminal in Japan.
The Barossa project supplies gas to the Darwin LNG facility using pipeline infrastructure from the offshore field located roughly 285km north-north-west of Darwin.
