MODEC said it will supply a SOFEC internal turret mooring system for the Coral Norte floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) project offshore Mozambique.

The Coral Norte project is being developed by Eni, together with its partners China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), Mozambique’s Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos (ENH), Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) and XRG.

It will add 3.6 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) liquefaction capacity, sourcing gas from the Coral North field.

The turret mooring system is considered a central element for the FLNG unit’s performance, allowing the vessel to safely weathervane and maintain stable operations amid the conditions of the Rovuma Basin.

MODEC is working in partnership with a Technip Energies and JGC joint venture (JV) to coordinate successful integration, efficient execution and long-term system reliability for Coral Norte.

The project reached its final investment decision in October 2025. Its hull launch was completed in January 2026 at Samsung Heavy Industries’ Geoje shipyard in South Korea.

A Technip Energies–JGC JV spokesperson said: “The work delivered by MODEC on Coral Sul established a strong operational baseline and demonstrated clear excellence in engineering and execution.

“Our partnership on Coral Norte builds on that success and supports our broader commitment to sustainable development in Mozambique.”

The first LNG production from Coral Norte is targeted for 2028.

MODEC has been involved with the project since its initial phases, supporting engineering and supply activities in line with project milestones.

The company has previously delivered similar systems, most notably for the Coral Sul FLNG.

The Coral Norte facility is described as an enhanced replica of the Coral Sul project, with further optimisation for efficiency and performance.

The Coral North field is estimated to contain more than 500 billion cubic metres of gas in place.

According to MODEC, the company is drawing on its experience from FLNG and floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) projects globally to deliver the SOFEC turret mooring system from design through to delivery.

MODEC mooring solutions business unit head Arun Duggal said: “Coral Norte is an important milestone for the industry and for Mozambique, and we are honored to contribute to this landmark FLNG project. Our team’s performance on Coral Sul set a high bar for safety, reliability and schedule discipline.

“This engagement reflects the trust we have built together, and we look forward to delivering a SOFEC turret mooring system that enables best‑in‑class operability – while continuing to invest in local capability and laying the foundation for future projects in the region.”

Earlier this month, Technip Energies and its partners secured an engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning contract for the Coral Norte project.
